Most GPs won't exclusively bulk-bill even with record Medicare promise, new surveys suggest

29 April 2025

Both Labor and the Coalition have committed to an $8.5 billion package incentivising doctors to bulk-bill all patients. But surveys by ABC NEWS and the Royal Australian College of GPs show only a fraction of doctors believe they will be able to bulk-bill more patients.

An ABC News survey of more than 800 GPs combined with exclusive data from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has cast doubt on whether the signature health policy of this election campaign can be fully delivered.

More than 90 per cent of doctors who contacted ABC News said they won't move to full bulk-billing under changes promised by both major parties.

The findings align with a similar survey by the RACGP, released exclusively to ABC News, which found two-thirds of respondents don't intend to bulk-bill more patients, let alone all of them.

We are committed to continuing to provide the best possible care to all our patients, and realistically, this means we would need to continue to be a private billing practice. If you have any questions or concerns please speak to your Doctor or ask to speak to the Practice Manager.
